Let me preface this post by saying that if you don’t already know by now I’m a huge gamer. I love playing video games and most of the websites I run are focused on the video games genre. So naturally I was looking to start another website about XBLA games (Xbox Live Arcade) and this lead me to purchase XboxLiveArcade.org on Dec 30th 2006. I held onto the domain for a few months while I waited to launch the forum.

At the time, the .com and .net were already taken by someone that just used it as a parked page. On a whim, a couple weeks after I purchased the .org I thought I’d just look to see if the .com was available because I remembered that when I first checked it was set to expire soon. I knew not to get my hopes up as most people renew their domains at the end of the year cycle automatically or at least near to it. However, to my delight, after entering my search I was staring at a GoDaddy screen that stated XboxLiveArcade.com was available! I couldn’t believe it dropped and no one picked it up.

For those of you that don’t own an Xbox 360 or follow video games that much – Xbox Live Arcade is the platform that small less expensive games are released on. You can download trials for every game to test them out or purchase them right from your Xbox dashboard for varying prices. So because of the fact that Microsoft never bothered to buy the domain and it was held by a domain parker for so long I couldn’t believe that I was able to get it for the cost of a new domain fee.

I launched the forum a few months later and I immediately linked to XboxLiveArcade.com from my other game sites using the anchor text “Xbox Live Arcade.” I’ve also shared links with other websites and the site currently sits at the number 5 slot on the front page of Google. Now I do need to make some alterations so that the description reads something like “Xbox Live Arcade Game Reviews, News and Forums,” but I haven’t gotten around to doing this. Anyway, because of the fact that the domain name is XboxLiveArcade.com and I’ve used “Xbox Live Arcade” as the anchor text it was really for the site to make it onto the front page of Google. Obviously the greatest thing about being on the front page for a highly relevant search term is the targeted traffic it’s been sending me. Check out this screenshot from Google Analytics:

Xbox Live Arcade Search Term
This is less than half of the traffic the site receives from search engines too :)

Now the only thing I have to worry about is Microsoft’s lawyers coming after me for it someday…

Are you on the front page of Google for your key search terms? If so, how long did it take you to get there?

I have finally finished my recommended page filled with publisher programs, forum products and webhosting solutions that I am currently using or have used before. For those of you that may just be subscribed to my RSS feed I am writing a post about it so that you can read the page.

The list below contains various publisher programs, forum products and webhosting solutions that I have used before and highly recommend to other forum owners and bloggers. I have had a lot of experience working on the net and have only listed programs or companies I have had first hand experience working with. The list will be updated as I find more great programs or companies that I can recommend to my readers.

Publisher Programs:

Google Adsense:

One of the best ways to monetize your website is with Google Adsense. And if you don’t already know, Google Adsense serves up contextual ads simply by placing the code on your website. You can choose from a slew of different ad sizes and customize the color scheme as much as you want. I use Google Adsense on nearly every forum and website I own because it does so well and it’s so easy to use. It’s also one of the easiest publisher programs to get approved for. So if you’re starting up a small forum and looking for a few ways to pay the hosting bills, try Google Adsense.

Text-Link-Ads:

Text Link Ads is just that; a text link advertising program. The approval process is a little more strict as they require you to be at least a PR3, if not higher to be approved. If at first you’re denied you can always call them up and ask to get in ;). The great thing about TLA is that it requires absolutely no work after the code is inserted on your website. You don’t have to change link colors to see what works better, change ad formats, ad placement locations or anything else that you often times have to do with other programs to improve your earnings. With TLA, simply input the code and they take care of the rest. TLA has a marketplace where advertisers can find your website and then purchase monthly links on it. In exchange for selling the links for you TLA takes 50% of the proceeds from each link sale, but I think this is a fair amount. I wouldn’t have sold any of these links by doing nothing if it weren’t for TLA ;). This is one of the easiest ways to add an additional unobtrusive revenue stream without sacrificing a lot of space on your website or annoying your users with ugly ads.

Kontera:

Kontera’s “Content Link” is another publisher program that an help make money on forums. Kontera’s code “reads” your webpage and then applies advertisements to various keywords found on the page content. It adds two underlines to the keyword that when hovered over pops up an advertisement. This program is a little more intrusive, but helps provide an additional revenue stream without having to sacrifice any of your previous advertising space.

Forum Products:

vBulletin:

vBulletin is the leading forum software on the net and in my opinion the best solution out there. A single license is $160, with multi license discounts that go into affect as you purchase more licenses. I use vBulletin on every forum I run and have had an incredible experience using it. The community of webmasters that run this software is huge. If you have any trouble using vBulletin and need some help you can ask at the official forums, or at vBulletin.org (which is also home to a huge variety of sweet forum modifications). vBulletin is the only forum software I use now and the only one I recommend using.

vBSEO:

vBSEO is a plugin that you install onto your vBulletin forum that drastically improves vBulletin’s ability to be indexed in the search engines and help provide search engine traffic. If you’re interested in reading more about how vBSEO performs check out my case studies. vBSEO has helped to send me more search engine traffic than I previously received before installing the plugin and I highly recommend the product.

vBskinworks:

vBskinworks is a great source for high quality vBulletin skins. It’s important to differentiate your forum from other forums and one step in that direction is to ditch the standard vBulletin skin that comes with the license and get something that will better fit the focus of your forum. I currently use a vBskinworks forum skin on my forum WorldofWarcraftBoard.com. Another advantage of going with a premium skin is that you don’t have to worry about updating your vBulletin skins by yourself after a new version of vBulletin comes out. You can simply download a new skin package and upload that to your site. vBskinworks also has an amazing deal going on right now where if you buy one skin you get another skin for free!

Extreme Pixels:

Extreme Pixels also offers premium high quality skins for a wide variety of forum software including vBulletin. The first skins I ever bought for vBulletin were from Extreme Pixels. I used one on GamingVidz.com for nearly two years before I hired a designer to create a custom skin. They currently have a deal where if you buy two skins you get a third for free.

Webhosting solutions:

Site5:

I used Site5 shared hosting for nearly two years before switching to a dedicated solution. With Site5, I was able to host 4 forums with around 100 people active at once and about 10 other websites for less than $20 a month. Site5 is a shared webhosting provider which means two things: Hosting is inexpensive, but you have to share your server with others. I highly recommend going with Site5 if you’re just starting a forum or if you’re looking to move to an inexpensive host and don’t have a ton of traffic. Site5 also has a lot of hosting specials all the time as well.

Soft Layer:

I currently use a dedicated server from Soft Layer to host all of my vBulletin forums, blogs and miscellaneous websites. I can’t remember when my server has ever gone down with Soft Layer. My server loads are really low and I have plenty of room to grow on this server. If you’re looking for a dedicated hosting solution I recommend checking out Soft Layer. When you speak with the salesperson try and get a few services thrown in for free or the monthly price dropped down a little. I was able to get a second hard drive for free and an upgraded port.

Platinum Server Management:

I currently use Platinum Server Management to keep my server up, secure and help with any other miscellaneous tasks. I know that part of the reason why I haven’t had any problems with my Soft Layer dedicated server is because of Platinum Server Management. I began my search for a server management company while I was in the process of picking out my new dedicated server. When I was speaking with the Soft Layer salesperson she had recommended that I check out PSM because many Soft Layer customers had great things to say about them. I checked out the company and found that PSM only manages servers with cPanel and that just so happens to be the control panel software I’ve been using for a few years. Besides, if they only work with one conrol panel software (cPanel in this case) then they must know it really well AND PSM was only $29 a month! When I was looking around at some other server management companies she had recommended I found many prices in the $60 to $100 a month range, so to find a service that I really needed for only $29 a month was a steal. I highly recommend Platinum Server Management if you use cPanel and want help administering the server, keeping it secure, performing server migrations and more.

Again, this list will continue to grow as I find more great companies to purchase products or services from and try out new publisher programs to use on my forums and blogs. I hope this list helps you out.

We’re a little past the three month mark since the installation of vBSEO on HaloBoards.com, so I’m going to show the results from Google Analytics as well as our current SERPS results. I’ve decided that in order to keep the updates on track I’ll be just doing one post per month for each case study. This will allow me to focus the extra time on writing other content for the blog ;). Ok, now that we’ve settled that here are the numbers for Week 12 (a little late) for vBSEO’s affect on search engine indexing and increasing web traffic for HaloBoards.com. Here are the numbers for Week 12:

site:haloboards.com (Google) up 2,600 to 26,700

site:haloboards.com (Yahoo) down 121 to 12,729

site:haloboards.com (MSN) down 65 to 142

Well the numbers are pretty much leveling off now, but as I’ve said all along the most important thing to me is vBSEO’s affect on sending more traffic to my forum and here are some graphs from Google Analytics:

April 10th to May 10th (1 month before vBSEO installation)
April 10th to May 10th (One month before vBSEO installation)

May 11th to June 11th (1 month after vBSEO installation)
May 11th to June 11th

June 12th to July 12th (2 months after vBSEO installation)
June 12th to July 12th

July 13th to August 13th (3 months after vBSEO installation)
July 13th to August 13th (3 months after vBSEO installation)

The traffic numbers for last month were pretty low, but I’m not that concerned about it as it consisted of mid to late July and into early August (two terrible times for traffic especially on my forums). I’m really looking to see how vBSEO does as we get back into the peak times for traffic. I’m still satisfied with the results and look forward to showing more numbers on next month’s vBSEO update for my vBulletin forum HaloBoards.com.

Are you using vBSEO yet?

*Side note, I meant to post this earlier on August 3rd, but new computer woes, server transfers and vacation threw me off so here it is now.*

I can’t even believe it’s been four months since I installed vBSEO on GamingVidz.com and started this series of posts on vBSEO’s affects on forum search engine indexing and sending traffic from search engines. Before we get the the Google analytics graphs let’s cover the SERPS since last update:

site:gamingvidz.com (Google) up 6,000 to 209,000

site:gamingvidz.com (Yahoo) down 2,234 to 24,877

site:gamingvidz.com (MSN) down 39 to 102

Overall, I think the first few month’s explosive growth has leveled off. I’m going to post over in vBSEO’s forums to see if this is to be expected or not. Either way, as I’ve said before the real pupose of this case study is to see how much search engine traffic is sent to GamingVidz.com with vBSEO’s help. Again, as you can see as a whole direct traffic has gone down; however, this always occurs on GamingVidz.com as the summer months bring less time inside watching videos and more time outside, on vacation etc. for my members. With that in mind, here are the numbers from earliest to latest thus far (pay attention to the search engine traffic chunk):

April 2nd to April 9th (Pre vBSEO installation - only one week of data)

April 2nd to April 9th (Pre vBSEO installation - only one week of data)

April 10th to May 7th (1 month after vBSEO installation)

April 10th to May 7th (1 month after vBSEO installation)

May 8th to June 4th (2 months after vBSEO installation)

May 8th to June 4th (2 months after vBSEO installation)

June 5th to July 2nd (3 months after vBSEO installation)

June 5th to July 2nd (3 months after vBSEO installation)

July 3rd to August 3rd (4 months after vBSEO installation)

July 3rd to August 3rd (4 months after vBSEO installation)

Sixteen weeks ago GamingVidz started with only 34,300 results and in four months vBSEO increased search engine results for a site:gamingvidz.com search of 209,000 results. It took GamingVidz nearly two years to reach 34,300 results and in four months vBSEO has increased search engine results by about 6x what we started with. As the graphs also show there has a substantial increase in organic search engine traffic as well! I know I’ve said it before, but I couldn’t be more pleased with my vBSEO license purchases and I recommend purchasing one for your vBulletin forums as well.

We’re halfway to the three month mark since the installation of vBSEO on HaloBoards.com, so that brings us to Week 10 of the case study on vBSEO’s affect on search engine indexing and increasing web traffic for HaloBoards.com. Here are the numbers for Week 10:

site:haloboards.com (Google) down 900 to 24,100

site:haloboards.com (Yahoo) down 205 to 12,850

site:haloboards.com (MSN) down 13 to 207

This weeks numbers were all down; however, last week Yahoo had a 1,512 gain so I’m not that concerned about the 205 drop brought about this week. I’m also not concerned by the drop in numbers for the other search engines as I’m still sitting at results that are well above what we started with. I still recommend vBSEO to vBulletin forum owners as it has so far shown to improve search engine indexing and increase search engine traffic for my vBulletin forum HaloBoards.com.

Here are the numbers for Week 9 of my case study on vBSEO’s affect on search engine indexing and increasing web traffic for HaloBoards.com:

site:haloboards.com (Google) stayed even at 25,000

site:haloboards.com (Yahoo) up 1512 to 13,055

site:haloboards.com (MSN) up 5 to 220

There was no change with Google and only an increase by 5 results for MSN, but the real winner here was Yahoo this week. Yahoo added an extra 1,512 results to hit 13,055. Overall, I’m still pleased with my purchase of vBSEO and it has so far shown to improve search engine indexing and increase search engine traffic for my vBulletin forum HaloBoards.com.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, once the vBSEO’s case study reaches the 3 month mark I decided that would be a good time to switch to giving updates every two weeks instead of once a week. Again, I’ve seen a small drop from Google this week, but Yahoo picked up some slack. Here are the numbers for week 14:

site:gamingvidz.com (Google) down 14,000 to 203,000

site:gamingvidz.com (Yahoo) up 2,885 to 27,111

site:gamingvidz.com (MSN) up 7 to 142
